What is a diamond?

A diamond is a natural gemstone that forms in the depths of the earth under very hot and pressing conditions. Often associated with love and eternity, diamonds are mined around the world and carefully cut to reveal their natural brilliance and beauty.

The properties of a genuine diamond

Hardness

One of the qualities of diamonds is their exceptional hardness. On the Mohs scale, diamonds score a perfect 10. This means they are harder than all other gemstones and resist wear and tear over time.

They also differ from zirconite, a synthetic diamond. Generally made from zirconium and zirconium oxide, synthetic diamonds are less hard than diamond.

Shine

Diamonds are famous for their exceptional brilliance. When properly cut and polished, they reflect light spectacularly, creating distinctive sparkles and shimmers.

Brilliance is due to the way light moves through the stone. It refracts inside, creating a play of colors called dispersion.

Light dispersion

Light dispersion is the ability of a diamond to split white light into a range of spectacular colors, often seen as a flash of color. This phenomenon is what gives diamonds their distinctive brilliance.

Zirconite resembles diamonds in appearance, but can lack the subtlety and light dispersion of diamonds.

Thermal conductivity

Diamonds are excellent thermal conductors. This means they cool quickly, which is why they are used in industrial cutting tools. You can test a diamond’s thermal conductivity by placing a diamond under your breath. Fogging disappears immediately, as the diamond absorbs body heat.

Symmetry and size

The way a diamond is cut influences its symmetry and size. Diamonds are often cut into well-defined shapes. Examples include the round brilliant cut, the square princess cut and the rectangular emerald cut. Careful cutting, with precise symmetry, is essential to maximize the stone’s brilliance.

Diamond recognition tests

Several tests can be performed to help recognize a genuine diamond.

The fog test

Place the diamond over your mouth and blow gently on it. Due to its high thermal conductivity, a real diamond will quickly dissipate the heat from your breath and stay clear. Fake diamonds will retain heat longer and stay fogged up.

The weight and density test

A genuine diamond is heavier than most fake stones. You can weigh the stone and compare it to its typical density of around 3.5 to 3.53 grams per cubic centimeter.

Thermal conductivity test

As previously mentioned, diamonds are excellent thermal conductors. You can use a diamond tester or an infrared thermometer to measure the stone’s thermal conductivity.

Examination under the microscope

Examining a diamond with a magnifying glass can reveal internal features, called inclusions, which are often present in genuine diamonds.

However, many real diamonds have no inclusions visible to the naked eye. That doesn’t mean they’re not true.

How much does a real diamond cost?

The value of a diamond depends on a number of factors, including the following

carat, clarity, color and cut. Larger carat diamonds, with fewer inclusions and a purer color, are generally more expensive. What’s more, the way a diamond is cut influences its price. Well-cut and polished diamonds are more expensive because of their exceptional brilliance and beauty.

To get an idea of the cost of a diamond, here is a general overview:

  • Small diamonds (less than half a carat) can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
  • Medium-sized diamonds (half-carat to one carat) can cost from a few thousand to several thousand dollars.
  • Large diamonds (over one carat) can be very expensive, ranging from several thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
